The scope.

At NRF Contracting, we thrive on delivering complex construction solutions under challenging conditions. This multi-phase project demonstrates our ability to integrate structural innovation, environmental compliance, and schedule-driven execution — all while working within tight site constraints.

Project details.

Mobilization & Site Preparation

Specialized crews and equipment were mobilized, with underground utility scanning completed to support safe excavation. Precision saw cutting, breakout, and removal of the existing foundation were performed per drawings, followed by selective slab removal for new shoring wall trench pours.

Shoring Wall & Structural Support

Helical piles and concrete shoring walls were installed in tight conditions to support the existing structure. Shop drawings were supplied, 20M rebar installed at 12″ centres, and six I-beams placed for tie-back support, using rock anchors due to site constraints. In collaboration with PERI, forming challenges were resolved, allowing the shoring wall trench to be poured using 25 MPa concrete.

Excavation & Environmental Compliance

Excavation was completed to engineered depths, with soil contamination testing conducted in accordance with Ontario Regulation 406/19. Excess soil was hauled and disposed of following confirmation of Table 1 compliance.

Foundation & Pit Construction

The new pit was integrated into the existing tunnel system and reinforced per design. The foundation was poured in six stages using 30 MPa concrete, incorporating a 180° stairwell, embedded conduits, and a thick suspended slab with multiple access openings. Layered skim coats and a sand bed over an environmental liner enhanced long-term durability.

Backfill, Slab Work & Finalization

Drainage board was installed around the foundation perimeter, followed by backfilling and compaction. Granular A was placed beneath all new slab areas, and the slab-on-grade was poured using 30 MPa concrete with a smooth trowel finish. The project concluded with site cleanup and demobilization.

Project Execution & Timeline

Double shifts were maintained throughout the project to meet a compressed schedule while upholding safety and quality standards.

The outcome.

The project was successfully completed under tight site and schedule constraints, delivering a fully supported structure, reinforced foundations, and upgraded slabs in full compliance with engineering and environmental requirements. Through careful coordination, specialized construction methods, and extended shifts, the site was safely prepared for future operations with durable, long-term infrastructure in place.
