MGI Underpinning

MGI Construction Corp // 205 Torbay Rd., Markham, ON

The scope.

This project involved the staged underpinning of a structural wall beneath an existing floor slab. The scope included demolition, excavation, formwork, reinforcement, and concrete placement, all executed without the use of pump trucks. The work was designed to stabilize and reinforce the foundation in accordance with engineering drawings.

Project details.

Mobilization
All personnel and equipment were mobilized to the site to start the underpinning process.

Demolition and Excavation
The existing 14-inch-thick, 132-foot-long floor slab was sawcut and removed. A trench (16″ thick × 36″ long × 5′ deep) was excavated in four stages.

Formwork and Concrete Placement
The front wall of the underpinning was formed using the existing subgrade as the back form. Concrete was poured in four stages using 25 MPa F2 mix for walls and Sika 212 grout in five pours, all delivered by truck.

Reinforcement
15M rebar pins were installed at 16-inch centres, with additional 15M rebar placed for caps. Detailed shop drawings guided all rebar placement. Excavation under the slab was performed as required.

Cap Construction
A 1-foot-high cap was formed to complete the underpinning.

Demobilization
Formwork was stripped, the site cleaned, and all crews and equipment removed upon project completion.

The outcome.

The underpinning was successfully completed in a controlled, staged manner to ensure structural stability. All work adhered to engineering specifications and was executed with precision and safety.
