The scope.
NRF Contracting completed the concrete foundation work for a new industrial printing press at IKO’s Barrie manufacturing facility. The phased scope included slab removal, excavation, reinforcing, and construction of the press pits, foundations and new slab areas required for the equipment installation and revised layout.

Project details.
Preparing the Existing Floor
Existing concrete was removed and excavated to engineered elevations, followed by subgrade preparation, layout and survey control for the new press foundation.
Building the Press Foundations
NRF constructed reinforced concrete foundations, equipment pits and pit walls, including dowelled connections to the existing slab, galvanized perimeter steel angles and 15M reinforcing steel.
Achieving Super-Flat Floor Tolerances
The new slab was constructed to meet the tight flatness and levelness requirements of the printing equipment. Careful survey control, concrete sequencing and specialized finishing were used to achieve the required tolerances.
Working Around an Active Facility
Construction was completed in phases within an operating manufacturing facility, requiring coordination with IKO, engineers, equipment installers and other trades while maintaining safe access and ongoing operations.
The outcome.
NRF Contracting delivered a reinforced foundation and super-flat industrial floor designed to support the new printing press system. The completed work included precision equipment foundations, concrete pits and more than 1,700 sq. ft. of high-tolerance slab construction, providing a durable base for equipment alignment, heavy loads and long-term operation.
